Surely there are more important attacks on our liberties than this one?
I’m the first to accept that liberty and freedom from abuse must not recognise ethnicity. I’m sure the butter-wouldn’t-melt bloke pictured above had nails removed, testicles jump-started, and all the rest of it. I’m sure Miliband lied. I’m sure MI5 are still lying about it this morning.
But sometimes we need to wake up about the security services. We need to remind ourselves about why they’re there, and what they do.
They do a dirty job dealing with bomb-carrying nutters and traitors that we wouldn’t want to do.
In 1972, they shot twelve IRA operatives and buried them in shallow earth in the Antrim area. Then they rang up the IRA and said ‘suck on that’. These blokes had been bombing the London tube network. The bombing stopped – and the IRA never went near the London Underground again.
The ends never justify the means….in normal life. The very existence of the security services is a recognition that one must have folks around who play dirty – because they’re dealing with nasty types who don’t obey the rules either.
You either don’t have MI5, MI6, CI9 and all the rest of them – or you do. You can’t have it both ways.
The main constructive outcome of this episode is that once again Miliband has been shown to be a man who tells whoppers day after day with consummate ease.
Did he have any choice? Of course he did. He could’ve said ‘These people want to destroy our freedoms and our culture – this is not about niceties, it’s about saving thousands of lives by torturing one person’.
Shrieks of horror from the civil rights lawyers. Fine – as a philosophical point – you have a watertight case, guys. Now welcome to real life. Real life is about trade-offs and tough decisions.
As for New Labour, they spend a lot of time telling us they’ve taken tough decisions when they haven’t; and as much time telling us they haven’t when they have.
This is the sort of thing spineless, unethical people do.
