Embattled Speaker Bercow….serious fight on his hands
As exclusively predicted here earlier this week, Former MEP John Stevens will fight the Buckingham seat at the forthcoming General Election, The Slog has learned.
Sources close to John Stevens told The Slog this afternoon that their man will run, thus bringing Speaker Bercow face to face with yet another leakage of his circa 19,000 majority.
“You can take it as a done deal – he will run” said a senior advisor, “We’ve had an astonishing response to our leaflets. Another will go out next week, and George Walden will give John his formal backing”.
Waldon is the former MP for Buckingham, and virulently anti-Cameron. Also he tends (like Bercow) to polarise opinion. Top blogger Iain Dale wrote of him in 2006:
‘…Former Tory MP George Walden was one of Britain’s worst ever High Education Ministers. Since leaving Parliament he has earned a living writing pseudo-intellectual drivel about politics and culture. It’s usually unreadable. I attended a discussion evening with him and his wife a couple of years ago, organised by Living Marxism [*]. He was insufferable and spent the whole evening putting down his wife. In the Independent on Sunday diary there is a piece on his book The New Elites in which he slags off David Cameron for “being a posh man pretending to be common”. Utter rubbish. But even if it were true, it’s better than a pub bore pretending to be an intellectual…’
Iain failing to come off the fence as always, there.
[*] Slogger’s note: Okshymoron, shurely?
Stay tuned to this wavelength for more Bucks Fizz on what promises to be the Seat of the Election….oh New Statesperson, how badly you got it wrong last Monday.
