CAMERON FACES THE KEY CHALLENGE OF THIS ELECTION: WAKE THE PEOPLE UP,OR BE A STRAW IN THE WIND
Within hours of this morning’s Slogposts about the cost of maintaining the UK deficit, the website politicshome has released (see above) a telling chart that summarises where the Tory campaign is going wrong.
There are two ways for Tory strategists to interpret this chart:
1. ‘Oh dear, we’re scaring the voters off – quick, let’s damp down the fears of what we’ll have to do’.
2. ‘Crikey, this Labour drivel about everything being OK has persuaded 2 in 5 voters that services can continue and everything will be alright. We must set them right and tell the truth’.
The only way to go is 100% behind option two above. This is a pivotal moment for Cameron: he either has the guts to tell the truth, or he has nothing but spineless spin.
Apologies for going a bit tabloid there, but this is as important as it gets: the public is wrong, and it needs to be told it is wrong.
The time for cynical pain-avoidance has passed. Now is the time for some positive persuasion by the Tories. The tide of information is rapidly turning in favour of the reality of Britain’s position. Make it starkly clear:
“What do you want – a harsh recession and cut services? Or a country utterly bankrupt and forced towards Third World status?”
Those are the only choices on the table. We face the same fate as Greece unless we wake up now – and make it clear to our creditors that we’re on the case.
This is make or break for the Tories. Flunk it now Dave, and Labour will be back as cocky and liberty-smashing and barmy as ever.
I’d rather have neither of you. But I’d prefer determined Conservative honesty to degenerate New Labour fantasy-knitting.
The People want to know, o Tory Party:
ARE YOU UP FOR IT OR NOT?
