EXCLUSIVE: NEW LABOUR FOCUS GROUPS IN MARGINALS ‘SHOW CLEAR ASHTON EFFECT’

Labour has carried out a small focus group project in the marginals, The Slog has learned.

Sources close to New Labour trade union grandee Jack Dromey claimed late yesterday that Labour focus group research in marginal constituencies ‘is showing a massive backlash against Lord Ashcroft’. While this would make sense, The Slogger is ever-wary of spun leaks designed to panic Tory strategists. However, this would support a quantitative poll quoted in the media this morning showing a narrowing Tory lead in such seats.

Stay tuned for updates: this is a significant development – because if true, it shows how badly the Ashcroft scandal has reversed at great speed into the Conservatives’ marginal machine.

The only problem with Ashcroft is that he promised to pay UK tax when given the peerage. Ten years later and just before the election it emerges he lied. That's the only thing that Labour can stick on the Tories.

the majority of people do NOT care two hoots for Lord Ashcroft and whatever it is that the media are so outraged about -it only matters to a very few pundits ,bloggers and professional liars. I do not believe that many regard it is any sort of scandal , and most will just ignore it or never pay attention in the first place.

No. Was it illegal for him to take a seat in the lords? No. Did he lie to anyone? No. I know the BBC are upset – but what about?

But the better to have got over the Ashcroft scandal now than closer to the election. The longer GB chickens out in calling the election, the better for the Tories as the public have a very short attention span. Ashcroft will be yesterdays news after GB's evidence today and further bombshells in the run up to the election.However, I think the Tories are playing the long game and not trying to have a massive majority because that will mean they inherit a huge pile of doo-doo. The better to have a coalition government where no party gets blamed individually for the lean times ahead.
