OFFICIAL: NIESR CONFIRMS THATBRITAIN IS FACING DEPRESSION

BUT TORY COMMENTARY ON THIS STILL NOWHERE TO BE SEEN

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) said that GDP grew by 0.3 per cent between December and February, compared with the preceding three-month period.

But within the study period itself, growth was decelerating back towards recession by the third month – ie, February.

Recognising this, the NIESR says that although the recession is technically over for the time being, the country would not rebuild total economic output to the levels seen before the slowdown for at least two more years.

This would leave the country in “a period of depression” until then, the Think Tank said.
