CABLE MILES AHEAD AS NATION’S PREFERENCE FOR CHANCELLOR

In the last hour, a new poll from Politicshome has shown the UK electorate makes the Libdems’ Vince Cable the No 1 choice as Chancellor (no surprise) by a massive margin – making him three time as popular as either the existing or shadow Chancellor. (Which surprised even The Slogger).

But before Nick Clegg gets overexcited/jealous/back to being keen on a coalition again, it should be pointed out that Vince’s score is still under a third of those interviewed. One in six would prefer Kenneth Clarke. Osborne and Darling score 12% and 11% respectively.

This is of no electoral significance (there won’t be a hung Parliament) but it does suggest two things: first, the voters probably think the mess is so awful, nobody can sort it out. And second, the voters prefer people who sound competent to Parties which sound off.
