The Slog has learned that Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling (unwilling star of the Gay B&B controversy – right) is to be dropped from the Cabinet if the Conservatives are elected to power on May 6th.
Conservative rank and file were arguing strongly last night that Chris Grayling’s ‘gay gaffe’ was the best excuse to get David Davies (left) back on the front bench as soon as the electoral coast is clear.
Grayling’s face (and especially that of his wife) said it all during and after the Manifesto launch; and several Kremlinologists noted that the alleged homophobe was not invited to the podium.
Will this mean a return to the Home Office slot for David Davies? Ironically, while himself a social liberal, Davies would probably support Grayling’s position on a libertarian basis. But many Conservative grassroots supporters were unhappy that DD wasn’t restored to his role (or put back into some form of Front Bench capacity) following his principled resignation in 2008.
