Having supported the Tories all last week on the issue of raising NI taxes, the business community yesterday switched its allegiance to ‘None of the Above’. Their fear, it seems, is the enormous gap between socio-economic reality, and fiscal promises….none of which address the deficit.
The FT noted last night that
‘A plethora of “populist vote winners” and a dearth of economic realism in all three main parties’ manifestos could leave the next government lacking the mandate it needs to reshape the economy and tackle the £167bn deficit, business leaders warned on Wednesday.
“Business wants more from all sides. Populist vote winners do not lead to a thriving UK economy,” the British Chambers of Commerce said. “Where are the tough choices and who will tell the electorate of the sacrifices needed to restore economic health?”’
Last night, The Slog posted this piece on this piece taking the same view as the business community – although for somewhat different reasons.
Anyway, to date the ‘main’ Parties have lost the radicals, the libertarians, the under-25s, the abstainers, the business community, the Scots and the Welsh. So then, social workers, Unite members and policy wonks – looks like this election decision is down to you.
Tonight, the robots leading this increasingly embarrassing attempt to get our votes will be on telly ‘debating’ before a live but very carefully chosen audience. This will be the first of three chances they’ll get to suggest that perhaps one or more of them might have blood in his veins, as opposed to just spin in his head.
I wouldn’t expect fireworks if I were you.
