“Greece is not Britain” he insisted, heralding in a new era of political openness, “Greece is in South Eastern Europe. We are nowhere near Greece and so the chances of infection are minimal”.
Hailing Lord Mandelson’s ‘forthright honesty’, Alan Johnson added, “Thank goodness this is out in the open at last. Germany is nowhere near Turkey either, the US is nowhere near China, and we’ve got nowhere near enough votes so we’re reduced to this twaddle”.
The ‘honesty’ directional change has thrown Tory strategists into a spin. Their Party political broadcast scheduled for tonight has been scrapped in favour of a new Saatchi concept, ‘Ten ways we’ve been dishonest in the past that we’re now coming clean about’.
A senior media consultant at Conservative HQ told The Slog, “We think it’s important to show that we’re doing much more than New Labour in terms of being more honest. I mean, we’ve been dishonest about tons of stuff, so this campaign definitely has legs.”
But observers insisted that no other Party had the mendacity reserves of Lord Mandelson.
“This is a stroke of political genius” said Polly Toynbee.
