Where are the clowns shouting ‘scaremonger!’ now?

The Left is wrong to ridicule the dangers we face from the markets. But an STV proportional representation system would have
delivered a clearer result than this one – and a safer currency.

The last polls came out with more detailed projections today….and pointed even more threateningly at a hung Parliament. As the ADVFN live currency monitor shows, in just four hours after 2 pm BST today, the Pound lost almost all the gains of the last two days.

And this was based merely on a possibility relating to the election. Just imagine how we’ll get hammered once there’s horse-trading, poor export figures, and wishy-washy deficit promises wafting about. Yet last night on Jon Sopel’s Campaign Show, once again I watched two seasoned journalists casually asserting ‘the world will not end’, blithely talking about ‘blatant scaremongering’ by the Tories – but perfectly able to accept innumerate scaremongering about ‘not damaging the recovery with Tory cuts’….the existence of which recover is still deficient in any real evidence.

I’m relaxed about the existence of a commentariat that reads the data fully and then reaches a potty conclusion. But in this situation, people with not the first idea about trading markets or credit management should stick to gossip, sociology, fashion, politics or whatever it is that they do understand.

I remain an enthusiastic fan of PR. But PR – as in STV PR – would never have produced a hung Parliament based on the popular vote projections we have seen this afternoon. It would have produced a very powerful and stable LibDem/Tory alliance (without PR to argue about) in which, quite frankly, it would be hard to put a rice-paper between the views of Chris Huhne and George Osborne, or Vince Cable and Ken Clarke for that matter.

This coalition would have neutered the power of the LibDem and Labour Left, and the Tory Right. And one which – at least until the fiscal crisis had passed, and the economy recovered – would have been able to act with the minimum of stress and strain. (It would also, dare I say so, have attracted some of those still around on the Right of the Labour Party….and allowed the barmy Left to tear itself apart as usual).

I’m not changing my prediction: I still say the last-minuters will give the Conservatives their 10-20 seat majority. But please, now – can we have an end to the yah-boo scaremonger bollocks. And please, please, please Clegg can you stop being a smartarse, and be prepared to compromise on every other demand except STV PR. Because without that, nothing will be changed – and Party power allied to surveillance technology will remove the rest of our liberties at breakneck speed.
