You may have read some reports about a Clegg/Brown call degenerating into a Prime Ministerial rant.

You may have spotted that spineless Auntie Beeb took the posting down within two hours of it appearing. Mandy Campbell strikes again.

Anyway, here’s what happened. Allegedly.

Gordon licked Nick all over and Nick did a bit of cautious licking back. Twenty or so minutes in, Clegg used the phrase “need to show the electorate that this is renewal”. Brown asked what he meant. Clegg said the PM should “seriously consider his own position”.

Nick hears sound of other phone hitting desk, secretary, window etc. Only kidding about that bit: what seems to have (genuinely) happened is that Gordon yelled down the phone for over a minute.

According to TenMole, the rant petered out quite quickly after that. According to the Beeb’s LibDem source, Clegg shook his head afterwards and made a mildly disparaging remark. My own Cleggie sources are still underwater. But we must remember that this whole scheme was predicated from the start on the assumption that Gordon Must Go.

I wonder when the members of The Last Redoubt will wake up and realise this.
