EXCLUSIVE: GORDON BROWN, THE FINAL LIE

AFORE YE GO…..

Lying in state? Or lying in wait?

HOW BROWN MISLED THE VOTERS
ABOUT OUR EU BAILOUT BILL

On 11th February this year, when asked by the BBC if UK taxpayers’ money would be part of any EU bailout aid, Gordon Brown told the BBC that discussions would only be ‘within the euro area’ . As we’re not in the Euro (thank God) The Slog took that to mean we Sterlingers would not pay a penny.

The following day, Lord Mandelson ‘enlarged upon’ Gordon’s misspoken assurance. Playing down the Eurocock-up, The Business Secretary claimed the single currency had been a ‘remarkable success’ and said it was in Britain’s long term interests to sign up in the future. Statements like this seen later really do serve to confirm the depth of Mandy’s foresight; he added on Radio Four that day “‘[The Euro] is strong and that is why it is going to remain intact,” he forecast. However, overnight, he had persuaded his Creature to backpedal a bit, producing this ‘correction’ in the Daily Mail next day:

‘…Gordon Brown yesterday said Greece’s woes were a Eurozone problem, but refused to deny that British taxpayers could be forced to contribute if Greece were forced to go to the IMF….’
Anyway, as usual with the Prime Minister, things aren’t panning out quite the way he promised they would. President Sarkozy last Friday night put forward the concept of a £50 billion bailout war-chest.

And we are involved big-time. Today’s Sunday Telegraph updates the story with more on Alistair Darling’ s involvement, describing him as ‘trapped’ in this deal.

I wonder if the Labour vote would’ve held up – and Nick Clegg surged – had this been known before May 6th?
I wonder what the UKIP vote might have been after seeing such news?

The Torygraph piece pertinently notes that the fund deal

‘…could be rushed through the summit without British approval, because the qualified majority voting system means Britain cannot strike down a plan that has the support of other major European nations….’

A somewhat irritable Slog Brussels source confirmed this morning that Darling would vigorously oppose any UK involvement in the deal.

So we’re doomed.
