King of the Belgians Herman Van Rompuy is concerned that we’re not converging as a European Union. This is, he says, because we lack courage. And that is, of course, bollocks.
The EU countries are not ‘converging’ because they represent 24 different cultures, 22 largely unshared languages, and 27 different points on the economic cycle. They have differing attitudes to the State, the arts, the civil service, human rights, voting systems, taxes and of course legal processes.
The only things converging in the EU are the clones it employs in Brussels. My own view is that they assemble the parts in China and then ship them in quietly via a deserted Dunkirk beach – where they are wired up with Belgian attitudes to national identity – ie, set at zero.
Herman Van Rompuy was born with these attitudes. He may evoke ridicule on the basis of his really quite appalling, fortune-cookie Japanese poetry. But he is more wolf than dead sheep.
Mr Van Rompuy wants us all suddenly to converge….so he can have all fiscal plans drawn up by elected legislators, bypass their elected Chambers – and thus fast-track the plans upon which he, the 100% unelected President, can then scrawl with a red pencil, vigour, insouciance, and impunity.
Stay closely tuned to why this chilly automaton must be stopped. For today, The Slog gives the most comprehensive rundown yet on why this “insignificant little man” has no soul – and a head empty save for delusions of grandeur.
