A Cabinet source has confirmed to The Slog this morning that, despite whispers of William Hague having ‘had enough of all the rumours and smears that go with politics these days’, the Foreign Secretary is locked into Cameroonian aims for the duration.
Yesterday afternoon the Evening Standard ran a somewhat overexcited piece suggesting that Hague might swiftly follow suit after the resignation of his assistant Christopher Myers. But privately, Hague has told colleagues that as a matter of principle, he will not be driven from office by vindictive untruths.
“I am pleased to say that William is staying put” the senior Cabinet source revealed.
Whatever one thinks of the Coalition, Hague’s all-round skills and negotiating ability are unmatched by anyone in Parliament. Indeed, it is a curious judgement on our culture that a detailed denial of persistently repeated lies earns only the reaction that the victim needs a better spin doctor.
The reality is that Guido Fawkes needs better sources. No change there, then.
Former Tory leadership candidate John Redwood said Mr Hague had shown “poor judgment” in sharing a room with Mr Myers. On his blog, Mr Redwood said the Foreign Secretary’s statement had “invited” comment on his private life. This too strikes the objective observer as an odd conclusion: why should anyone be ‘invited’ into Mr Hague’s entirely unremarkable private life?
