CRASH 2: You have to laugh…

From the Wall Street Journal this morning:

‘French market regulator Jean-Pierre Jouyet Friday said between 15 and 20 banks in Europe need recapitalization as a result of financial problems, but none of them are French’.

!

Only the French would say that with a straight face.

As a 13yr old at the time, my adolescent surfeits of testosterone meant I followed the case avidly.

At times, I still get excited, but as a tired 61yr old, I’m buggered if I can remember why…

The only defense available to the French is to point out other Euro members vulnerable banks and hope the markets go for them instead.

Good to see the Euro members working together in harmony and providing mutual support to each other.

That was sarcasm :)

Playing beggar thy neighbour and stabbing each other in the back is perhaps more accurate.

Because of Jean-Pierre using the WSJ to share his words of wisdom, I thought I would take a look at the US definition of fraud. It looks like you have to satisy all 9 criteria, which at first sight, looks a shoo-in

1. a representation of an existing fact
2. its materiality
3. its falsity
4.the speaker’s knowledge of its falsity
5.the speaker’s intent that it shall be acted upon by the plaintiff
6.plaintiff’s ignorance of its falsity
7.plaintiff’s reliance on the truth of the representation
8. plaintiff’s right to rely upon it;
9. consequent damages suffered by plaintiff

Remember why the EU was set up in the first place. For whose benefit was it? To give the French credit, they got away with the lopsided architecture of their creation because they had the nerve to suggest it, the ‘plausible’ intellectuals to back it and the UK was otherwise engaged in a big shift to socialism after WWII while Germany was still working on its ‘economic miracle’. 60 years later, we still can’t decide what to do about the EU. But we keep paying the bills for all those supposedly poor countries to get better infrastructure than we can even dream of. It’s a strange Europe we live in.
