Small admin point for genuine Sloggers

Sorry to be brutal here, but new rule on comment-threading from here on.

Anyone who turns up and leaves a gratuitous insult, or demonstrates no awareness at all of the what The Slog is about, or shows in the thread that they couldn’t be bothered to either read the text or use the search function, will be spammed without warning or explanation.

The folks who come here to discuss, debate, learn and suggest won’t be affected. The Trolls will…and quite frankly, I have too much on at the minute to bother engaging with them.

John. I believe you are being targeted by trolls because you are gathering momentum for your site, and perhaps pose a threat to someone.. perhaps the ‘establishment’. This is where people can and DO challenge, even if only verbally, those who seek to ‘rule’ us. Please keep up the great work! You are an inspiration to many.

Problem with trolls is such that:
Real ones (ones on the payroll) who use different IP and email addresses every time are difficult to eradicate. Amateurs are easy.

I LERVE the trolls, John. They are just so much self-destructive painfully glorious crap. Just find a way of moving them to the bottom of the list.

But I also had to rescue this blog from spam because it came in from “Evidenced deconstruction” and not “The Slog”.

Might it be construed as an attack on their proverbials, bringing the full weight of the occupants of the Allee des Droits de l’Homme building to bear.

After all trolls, (even inhuman ones) have rights and as Theresa May can testify, non inclusive treatment of even a single digit is not without repercussion.

There may now be the scenario where the ECHR’s own regulation 43#1, apparantly a regulation that is unequivocal in stating that an appeal must be submitted 3 months from (and including) the date the judgement was delivered, is being challenged in no other than, somewhere none of us should be too surprised to hear, the European Court of Human Rights.

Dunno what WordPress offers for blocking people as it depnds on what Header information is handed over by the user’s browser when they post. But the usual things used to block are: posting name, e-mail address and IP Address. Sometimes the User-Agent can also be used. But all can easily be circumvented.

I heard a rumour that Left Foot Forward and Labour Uncut had a real problem,.last spring,with a troll,in the run-up to the triumphal election of Garry as CEO of an over indebted ,out of control nation state,who had campaigned on the slogan,’It all started in Scotland,and not America,as I previously told you’.Anyway,Garry did not get elected, and is now on long term sick leave.Will Straw,the founder of LFF,has now left his post and is begging his father to stand down,while the seat is warm,and before he is deported to Libya for reasons that are ‘sub judice’.LU has enjoyed a ‘strategic reface of it’s long term socialist mission statement’,and has advised the three people that follow it’s website not to vote for KL,in the upcoming multicutural election for leadership of the world’s worst public transport system..And then,I hear,fresh from her headline making deportation of public enemy No.1,the Home Secretary is about to introduce legislation outlawing ‘internet trolls’,with penalties ranging from amputation , right up to reading ‘Beyond the Crash’,I won’t go on…

Ditto. I profess to not always knowing what’s going on, even after reading some Slog posts, some of it is that complicated. Especially on the nuts and bolts of world financing, and the bollocks that goes on in that domain. But I find them fascinating nonetheless. In fact, that subject of which I know the least, is the one I’m probably most fascinated, probably because for the first ever I’m reading of world finance KNOWING the veneer of bullsh*t has been melted away by a combination of JW’s sometimes caustic wit, his contacts in important places and his own personal insight.

I have learned quite a lot from the Slog in the year I’ve been reading it, but I’m certainly not clued up like some of your other commentators, not even close.

So please don’t “spam, ban, thank you Mam” me. My ignorance is innocence.

Spammed or banned? If the former, then I suspect the response might be just the tiniest bit illegal (not that ISPs tend to bother too much with legalities; there’s usually a clause in their terms & conditions which amounts to “Don’t be an irritation to us, or we’ll boot you off”).

Banning, by contrast, is perfectly OK with me. Should you wish to be truly evil, then a trick suggested by a colleague of mine for dealing with website defacers might prove entertaining: leave the abusive comment up, but visible only to the machine which posted the actual message. El Troll then gets the impression of being able to prance with impunity, but looks a bit of a twerp if he ever boasts of his trollery elsewhere (not to mention getting no responses at all). My colleague has many a trick like this; his one-line defence against header-insertion attacks is particularly elegant.

I suspect you haven’t the time to do all this moderating. You are too valuable an asset.
I am sure you could set up a readers scoring system, say whenever a ratio of – to + is greater than 20 to 1, that comment gets sent to a trash folder. It can still be read by anyone interested, but is sifted out of the main body, by reader power.
