BT…

I was merely pointing out the play on the word ‘pound’.
If a kilo equals 2.2 pounds (U.S. weight conversion) and a kilo
costs two British Pounds…then about half a kilo (one pound) of bananas would cost about one British Pound per U.S pound.

Locally, we get bananas here in North Idaho for about 50 cents U.S. per pound (16 ounces) or less if on sale.

Right now Brazilian bananas are about 68 pence per kilo in London. That converts to about Reais 2.00 in Brazil. But they actually cost up to Reais 3.00 there despite that they grow the darned things by the million. And as a proportion of their average wages they are very expensive. To be the same as London they should be about 50 cents a kilo there, not Reais 3.00.

Sadly I am having difficulty penning anything worthwhile gere- this word press thing is playing up, can’t re read what I am writing- must be something to do with Twitter account.
Studying the ways of the world doesn’t help unless you are amongst it all. My father did that for the UN, and it killed him!

Brazil has long had a problem with price inflation. Prices in Brazil are a racket between the private sector and government. The consumer pays.
Given current exchange rates, bananas are more expensive in Brazil than London. And when you compare the price there with the average income, it’s outrageous…equal to £2 per kilo. Same for every other commodity.

And like everywhere else that measures price inflation by using a version of CPI, actual price inflation is about double or treble what CPI reports.
In Brazil’s case, they have lowered the Selic rate (equal to our Base Rate) to 9% in recent months and expectations are that it will be reduced to 8.5% soon. This is because (a) their economy has ground to a halt and (b) major currencies (USD, GBP, EUR) have been devalued by 25-30% which makes Brazil’s exports more expensive.
