A first in almost every way
The first Jesuit to be elected Pope will be the Buenos Aires Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio. In 2005, he was the runner-up to Ratzinger.
He has taken the name Francis I.
He enjoys a strong reputation on social justice: a humble man from working class origins who travels on the bus to work, has Italian roots, and is very conservative.
“This is signalling a humble Pope close to the people,” said an Italian source.
Above all, he is a major outsider: almost nobody tipped him.
