I got some heat last week from German sources for referring to the jingoism of the German media these days. I wonder if they’ll be able to look me in the eye today after this astonishing headline from today’s Bild.Zeitung online. It’s referring to a visit to Berlin by French President Francois Hollande. For those of you who don’t speak German, either through idleness or on principle, this is the translation:

‘The sick man of Europe visits Merkel’.

I’m afraid the Germans are and always have been their own worst enemy. Beneath the photo is the caption:

‘French Problem Child meets German Wonderkid’

und for zose off yoo still not getting it, vee are addink also ‘The ever unpopular Francois Hollande with the ever-popular Angela Merkel’. Mein Gott im Himmel, but Joseph Goebbels would’ve been proud.

Cue Radio Luxembourg DJ Jean-Claude Juncker wittering on about ‘undeserved German archetypes’ in the Greek media.

Just a note… I just saw said BBC footage… the word they are chanting is “OHI” which is NO in Greek… it is pronounced “auhee” and they way they were saying it was in two parts (protest style “au-hee”)… you won’t many Greeks going quite THAT far… at least not yet.

Great stuff Viking Jack It reminds me of a time I saw a TV crew filming a protest because the TV station was sympathetic to the cause they chose an angle to event that made the protest appear bigger than it did in real life……..I walked between the camera and the reporter turned toward the lights and asked ” is this a staged event or am I in your movie?” The lights went off and the reporter glared at me until I left.

Once again, I suggest delving deeper into the BIg Picture:

Nothing these guys does is in any way incompetent. There is a game plan, but unfortunately most of us do not know what it is, so just seeing the effects is no help in perceiving the causes or roots.
If the end result desired is chaos, well then that is what has just been achieved. At no time have we ever seen the EU or ECB dither, until now. So the dithering (which affects market stability and creates personal anxiety for all) is on purpose.

Don’t take my word for it. It requires research.

Yep, we certainly shouldn’t exonerate the Pols. I agree with that. They’re basically weak and pliable – and many of them far too greedy and bent to even represent the family dog, let alone, their Constituents.

But the initiation pressure came from the City. I’ve sat in meetings where the old dodge no.53 is trotted out… if you don’t do that/or/ if you do do this (depending upon what the desired outcome was), City banks will just up stakes and shunt off to (take your pick) Zurich, Frankfurt, Paris. This threat invariably works because the revenue and jobs that arise from the City are enormous.

I also agree that Brown/Blair are as equally as culpable as Thatchler. But she was a right-wing spook’s moll and a zealot for the incipient neo-con “free markets” concept – which in my Pol-Speak to Sicilian to English iPhone app translates as “protected rackets”.

I wasn’t accidental that Blair and Brown, during the course of their periods in high office, both bent a humble knee in homage to Maggie – first daughter of the Pinay Cercle.

I am afraid that despite all her (his?) efforts, the lady in red has little idea of what is fact and what is not. It is to be regretted that an English education has served her (him?) poorly as it has not given the necessary insights into the world that surrounds her (him).

This can be seen by the frequent use of ‘evidence’ that is clearly – and verifiably – incorrect.

As to US/UK prisons – when Ceaușescu was deposed in the late 80s a prison was evacuated by British troops (or somesuch). In this European denizen, there was only one bed per cell – and more astonishing yet, each cell had a private toilet and washroom. Things that would be brought to an ‘enlightened’ isle off the Northern coast of Europe more than a decade later. One really wonders what is going on there.

As an aside, rather than an O/T, do any other Sloggers wonder if closing the 2,000 megawatt (MW) coal-fired Didcot A plant and 1,000 MW oil-fired Fawley power station this Good Friday, (under EU 2015 emission directives), and replacing them with Gas fired generators….And then having the EU monumentally pissing off the Russians who will have a considerable say in the price of EU gas next winter (even if ours in UK mainly comes from Quatar and Norway)….might not be a rather bad idea when it comes to the next few years of UK (and EU) energy security, in the present climate?

Even if we in the UK still care to obey the EU emmissions directive when it finally comes in during 2015, I would have thought that maintaining as wide a range of options in power generation as possible here in the UK would have been a much better idea. Time to start filling the logshed again for next winter !

Naturally, TGNR, I could supply you with hundreds of reports of similar occurences – but, unfortunately, that’s the way it is over here at the moment. But a wind of change is slowly but surely gathering speed, and I’ll use this as a chance to put in a good word for ‘Bild’.

Jingoistic it may be, and I personally have never paid good money for a copy, but it has redeemed itself of late. It is the only national newspaper that describes the perpertraters of immigrant violence by their land of origin, usually Turkish but they can also be from other Islamic countries, and has ceased using the euphemism ‘Südländer’ = ‘Southerner’!

What the Eurocrats should have done is start with free trade then unhindered immigration and then after years of that structure, following on with a common currency. Until Europeans mentally consider themselves one people they can never have a common currency that works.

@Altergoman – The point I was trying to make was that if these greedy criminals had been allowed to go bankrupt (rather then being bailed out by the state) or where necessary prosecuted and jailed the market would have sorted it out and we would now be in a much better place. Its not free capitalism to bail out greedy stupid individuals and their banks who have recklessly gambled themselves into bankruptcy. The horrible hybrid that’s now been created is a capitalist financial system that carries no risk to the banks. The point I was trying to make is a properly free market means failures go bankrupt and criminal get jailed.

@Dave Guy – I respect what you say but we will have to partially disagree.

If the politicians had regulated these markets properly and jailed these greedy criminal shysters we would not be where we are today.
The politicians rigged the market, opened the credit taps and and kept interest rates stupidly low creating an enormous boom. The Government ultimately controls the amount of credit and they just let it rip. The politicians dismantled the safety systems put in place after the last great depression and the politicians encouraged absurd bank lending to the poor to buy over priced housing they simply could not afford. This was a strange perverted form of socialism. The politicians, Labour ones at that awarded Knighthoods and other baubles to these greedy criminals. It is not capitalism that has caused this mess but greedy criminal individuals who should have been prosecuted and jailed. In the UK most of this happened under a socialist Labour Government, Margaret Thatcher having left office in 1990. I would respectfully suggest that the great socialist and self professed miracle Chancellor Gordon Brown is a far more viable candidate if blame is to be apportioned along with his greedy bankster friends.

The idea that the market would have sorted it out themseves as someone earier opined makes me think I imagined it all when the Us banks pleade and got via their ex-banker cypher Paulson a mere $800 billion dollar loan without them having to disclose their actual mark to market valuation (probaly all trading in insolvency) and the same as to the UK bankers saved by Brown who claimed to have saved the world or something similar when he foolishly bailed the UK banks out without forcing into bancruptcy first.

I ponder why the Germans are getting such a bad press outside of Germany, it seems to me pure tall poppy envy.

Is not the UK public in agreement that the UK pays too much into the EU buget?

But hey our money is so much more valuable than German taxpayers money.

I hear what you say but would like to respectfully suggest you may have temporarily forgotten what caused this problem in the first place… i.e., the unrestrained greed of the community of bankers (of which I once numbered myself, sad to say), who sought growth year after year, in order to boost their bonuses.

Any genuine retrospective analysis of markets is that they are cyclical and do not grow year on year. The appropriate old saw for this is “what goes up always comes down” – but bankers didn’t want their bonus pool to diminish – ever – but to always grow.

Possessing a certitude that the community as a whole, in extremis, was bound to be rescued by their respective governments, our clever banking fraternity simply found more ingenious ways of evading reality to ensure “growth” – in other words, the technique of “leveraging”.

I left the City in the early 1990’s and already recognized the dangers with the arrival of new hedging products – that could also be used for the purposes of gambling. By late 1990’s I knew that sooner, or later, there would be a massive reckoning.

If I could see that looming nightmare back then, then I am certain that untold others more senior than I (I was a Treasurer and, therefore knew the products intimately) knew it too.

Prudence was dumped in favour of greed and the deregulation of the financial markets during the 1980s, did more than anything else to send a signal that this was ok.

In the last analysis, markets can never regulate themselves simply because throughout history, humans never have been able to regulate themselves either.

@Dave Guy – The problem with what you say is that much of this trouble has got little to do with the free markets but is the result of ongoing political interference and manipulation. Left to their own devices the free markets would have sorted all this out several years ago with a sharp correction, it would have been unpleasant but not fatal. Governments interfered and bought it off with massive borrowing, quantitative easing, and a whole load of other financial jiggery pokery kicking the can down the road. Now when the day of reckoning does finally arrive (as it surely will) it will be really, really bad. This is not free capitalism but a sick and twisted hybrid created by the worlds political elite and completely rigged to suite their own greedy desires. Many of these scumbags are self professed socialists.
