Male Conservatives must rethink their attitudes and behaviour to women or be “left behind” a Tory MP has said. Bernard Jenkin (left) will no doubt have opprobrium poured upon his head for putting forward such a notion; but the thing is, which particular attitudes and behaviour did he have in mind?
Let me reassure you: Jenkin would never wish a woman to be done down. In May 2009, he was reported by the Daily Telegraph to have used £50,000 in expenses in order to pay his sister-in-law rent on the property he uses as his constituency home. I don’t know about you, but a chap who insists on his sister-in-law getting full whack at that level (and pitching in with his own personal taxpayers’ money to guarantee it) gets my vote. Oh yes: there’s a man who believes in Rents for Women.
But such is the nature of injustice in our Nation, on 27th October 2009 it was initially recommended that Bernard Jenkin pay back £63,250 by expenses auditor Sir Thomas Legg. This is the highest amount known to have been recommended after an audit of MPs’ claims on second homes expenses.
How much more could an MP sacrifice in the cause of equal pay for women?
