Another question is why a supposedly left-wing paper is giving a platform to both Blair and Charles Windsor on the same day.

The attraction of many newspapers is not the articles but the comments posted. Articles by the likes of Polly Toynbee or Owen Jones (in the Indie) are so predictable that all you need to do is read the title to know what’s in the article. No time wasted before you add your comment. The problem with the Guardian is that there are so many commentators that you can’t enter into any dialogue, the flow of comments being too fast. A recent feature of the Guardian comment section is that journos on the paper now offer readers ‘selected comments’. This is clearly the way forward for the Guardian. Only a small step and these selected comments will be lifted up and presented as articles. Good business getting your articles for free.

As for the Indie … where do they get their journos from? YTS or whatever is today’s equivalent? If they were back at school, where most were a few years ago, they would get their homework handed back and told to brush up on both quantity and quality.

As for the future of the press … its obvious that fewer and fewer people will buy paper copies. Even commuters find it more comfortable to read the paper on tablets etc than elbow their neighbours while folding the paper. The tabloids will be safe while their readership can’t afford a tablet or are working on sites where you wouldn’t want to leave a tablet lying around. It will become more and more irrelevant whether a news transmitter offers a paper version or simply a website. It is noticeable that the BBC are now inviting journos from websites onto their programmes and not just journos from the papers. The Indie looks doomed. The Guardian continues to depend on public sector job ads. However, how long will it be before Government departments decide that they no longer have to advertise jobs in papers and that anyone who wants a job in education or health will just have to go online?
