City Correspondent Anthony Hilton thinks “so few boards have any real idea about what goes on at the sharp end in their business” they can’t be held to account”.

But, um, they still take the money, right?

Apologism for the bankers is now reaching similar proportions to David Irving and Adolf Hitler.

In the US Rep Marcy Kaptur and Sen Elizabeth Warren have introduced legislation to reinstate the 1933 Glass Steagall Act. It would separate commercial from investment banking. The bankers are apoplectic about its ramifications. A huge fight is process, but most legislators don’t have the testicles they need to see it through. A recent poll in the Costco monthly shoppers magazine showed 90% of those responding in favor of Glass Steagall. As one American has said it is Glass Steagall or Banker’s Genocide!

I am also a complete idiot with no idea how to run any kind of business and I would like to advertise my availability here for a highly paid job on any willing board of directors, so long as they continue to bear all that in mind when I inevitably screw up. In fact I can save them some time, just pay me the golden handshake now and I won’t even turn up.

Current legislation outside Health and Safety and Fraud gives Directors a relatively free hand. It is the job of the Investment Analyst , or Financial Adviser to the considerable digging to see how the Financial Reports are structured. As we know, the quality of these people in this and most other job descriptions has descended to the levels of Town Hall and Whitehall, even Westminster.

Bank regulations which double down on ex ante perceived risks, is what is killing the Western economies… and not so softly.
