Whilst Hannan is rather “gung ho”, surely the point he makes (at great and flamboyant length) is that the UK is not inconsequential-neither more nor less than that. He’s a politician with an article to write so has to make a big thing of it.
The only “empire” Britain ever had was India, the remnant of the Mughal empire. In reality what Britain had was a free trade system enforced by the Royal Navy-and we should probably have stuck with protectionism and invested at home rather than abroad.
