His dad was an MP, He was an MP, is Son his an MP, Oh and is granddaughter hopes to become an MP in 2015.
Then again New Labour don’t believe in Dynasties?
Still, like Mrs T. love or Loth them at least you new what they represented.

Benn himself once observed that, in his view at least, there are two types of politician – signposts and weather vanes. There is much in that when you think on it … and just how many weather vanes we have at the moment, twitching and farting with every slight variation of wind direction.

Enoch Powell counted Benn as one of his friends, that’s good enough for me. Benn may have been as mad as a bloody hatter, but charming, incorruptible and possessed of very good manners. Can’t ask for a lot more than that …

I can’t love or hate people I don’t know personally. Nor can I judge their real values, sense of integrity or honesty because all that I am allowed to see is what an editor or TV director wants me to see.

Having said that, A W-B always struck me as just another establishment champagne socialist enjoying a comfortable life and career as a Westminster Windbag. He was in the cabinet that cancelled the TSR2. As a lapsed engineer, I believe the knock on effect of that decision on British technology and related industries was catastrophic. With a degree in PP&E he was an obvious choice to be appointed as Minister of Technology, where he continued to radiate the white heat of waffle.

Despite all that, I remember enjoying a series of radio discussion programmes featuring AWB & Enoch Powel. I think they were on Radio 3 before the BBC went to pot – must have been the late eighties or early nineties. They were polite, civilised, articulate and informative – a pleasure to listen to. I doubt you could find modern replacements – Michael Portillo & Diane Abbott don’t even come close.

He was certainly more honest than most; an old friend was one of his assistants for several years and would testify to that.
