Three days ago I was sitting happily unconnected to either the mains or the internet in a house devoid of electricity, working at an Acer laptop. (I often set out ideas and first drafts offline, as it’s devoid of distractions, apps, daft info panels, and emails telling me that my penis has won $100m.
Three months ago I was sitting in the same house – offline and on battery – with electricity in the house. That time, I was working at an HP laptop equipped with their highest 5-star level of protection and support.
On both occasions, the sky was clear, and there were no storms.
On each occasion, I had contacted the same left wing friend who lives in the north of England with a view to setting up a Skype conversation.
On each occasion, I left the pc for two minutes. When I cam back, it was dead.
On both occasions, every ‘expert’ with whom I spoke said “impossible”. Both HP and the French specialist I consulted said “power surge”. Both said it was “impossible” that such a thing could happen when offline and off mains.
Clearly, the two conclusions are mutually incompatible. And equally clearly, the same thing has happened twice, to the same person, on different computers.
I’ve been given the name of another specialist over here in France.
In the meantime, I hope to be back online on my 3rd pc this year by tomorrow: this missive comes to you courtesy of Mikal and his brother Danyiel.
In the meantime, if any blogger has suffered the same experience, could they please contact me on jawslog@gmail.com
