The Daily Guardigraph

The Slogger posted this tonight on a comment thread debating Obama’s plans for the US banking system:

This is a real turning point in Obama’s Presidency. Twice in a week he has said ‘We’re not going to take this crap any more’. But how firm he stands in this will have ramifications far exceeding the aims of one man: what’s at stake here is the result of Neo-con Friedmanite drivel versus the traditional Benthamite values of the American Republic.
‘Devil take the hindmost’ should never have held sway in a nation that began with freedom of expression, and the idea that anyone can make it if they try.
The GOP victory in Massachusetts suggests that popular opinion is swinging away from Obama’s agenda of Healthcare. In the face of this, the President has come out fighting. I for one am surprised by this – but welcome it.
Last week a comment-threader in the US said he didn’t sign up for either Communism or neo-conservatism. Obama’s job now is to show he represents neither franchise – only that of encouraging both enterprise, and freedom from dependancy.
Many of us feel like this. We find comfort (at various times) both in The Telegraph and The Guardian. There is no contradiction therein – only a desire for fairness at all levels of society.
