James Purnell’s ambition

I started off back in the stripped-in photo days not liking Purnell much. But we have mutual friends who say he’s ok; and last year he wrote an extremely erudite plea for practical radicalism.

Yesterday he said the Left in general – and Darling in particular – weren’t willing to face the realities of Britain being poorer. It is an important point about which the Left is in denial.

I somehow don’t think that Purnell is really going to disappear into local social work. I’m sure he’ll immerse himself in that. But he is, I suspect, quietly waiting for New Labour to disappear up itself.

However, Purnell also said he was pleased that Darling had resisted the temptation to give away goodies. Where is the temptation when the cupboard is bare?
