From The Daily Beast website this evening:
‘Oil executives testifying before Congress Tuesday said that the massive oil spill traumatizing the Gulf Coast is a rare disaster unlikely to happen again. They pushed for continued offshore drilling, saying American jobs are at stake. Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson said his company follows proper safety and maintenance protocol that would prevent an event like the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion, implying that BP did not. Chevron Chief John Watson said every one of his company’s employees has the authority to immediately stop work if unsafe conditions are noticed.’
Oil hyenas scrapping over a corpse are not a pretty sight. Over the last fortnight, we have seen a hysterical American press vilify and then crucify BP on the basis of an assumed (but quite wrong) nationality. Now the US equivalents are gung-ho to carry on drilling, claiming an omnipotent ability to control every and any force of nature, anticipated or otherwise.
Will the US media dish out the same sanctimony to these companies?
Let’s wait and see.
