But Juncker continues to court him

The Slog has blogged a dozen times over the last year or more about the real nature of Turkish PM Recep Erdogan. Everything I predicted is now coming to pass.

Once the closet Islamist Erdogan had achieved the majority he wanted for Constitutional change in his country, he emerged from the closet at some speed. Shortly after Cameron made a speech in Ankara showering him with praise and calling the EU’s shunning of Turkey “shameful”, Erdogan showed his Westernised credentials by sending open and fraternal greetings to Iran, dubbing Turkey “Iran’s best friend on Earth”.

Now, encouraged by Cameron’s calamitous reference to Gaza as “a concentration camp”, Erdogan is talking about visiting there – presumably with a view to spreading some harmony about, and trying to solve the issue.

The Turkish Prime Minister has deliberately upped the ante against Israel in three stages. There is no reason for any of it. His excuse is the UN’s report on the Israeli flotilla raid, but that is arrant bollocks: he knew no more about the Gaza raid after the dossier than he did before. Anyway, he expelled Israel’s ambassador.

Next, he mentioned the Gaza visit and suggested his warships would accompany the next flotilla. Clearly, he expects there to be a next one: he would know, because the last flotilla did all its refuelling in Turkish Cypriot ports…courtesy of Erdogan.

And now, he plans a visit to Egypt…another lauded ‘Arab Springer’ that has rapidly taken a harder-line Islamist stance towards Israel.

The writing was on the wall about this guy from Day One. The Foreign Office, as usual, is blind to it. To date, I have not read or heard a single word from our Foreign Secretary about Turkey. I’m not even sure he’s been there yet.

I will get the usual deluge of hate-comment threading by the mad folks and the blinkered. Fine, go ahead. It’s obvious to anyone with a functioning brain cell who the bad guys are here. Recep Erdogan is trouble, and somebody is going to have to deal with him before too long.

Lest we forget, he is a NATO ally. But then, Pakistan is a US ally – and that’s not going too well either. But none of this is putting off Jean-Claude Juncker, the Prime Minister of a small radio station that occasionally pretends to be a country. At a news conference in Ankara yesterday, Luxembourg urged both Turkey and the European Union to start talks over visa facilitation for Turkish nationals travelling in the EU. That’ll be a good way to monitor terrorism, then.

What Juncker wants is for the EU to be nice to Erdogan’s Turkey…and reignite the EU-entry talks. In reaffirming this, the greatest living Luxembourger said his finance minister will visit Turkey again in the spring next year, and “help accelerate the economic ties”.

We need another word for appeasement – one based on desperate, economic greed as opposed to just geopolitics and the desire for a quiet life. I thought, maybe, Turdburgling. But it needs more work.

Our foreign policy is wrong. The FCO is asleep, Juncker is a silly little man, and Recep Erdogan is dangerous.

One bunch of power-crazed nationalists imprisoning a much smaller and far less powerful bunch, using their children for target practice, denying them access to their own land, their own houses and even to humanitarian aid – by brute force. Seems obvious to my hate-filled, prejudiced brain – as a trained historian.

In addition, turdburgling was the allotted task of junior Boy Scouts in our troop at camp – emptying the chemical toilets into pits they dug and covering and ‘making good’.

Your criticism is well taken, John old pea, and looking back, it’s true that I can’t see a single example of sarcasm in all of your contributions – in fact I would say that they are as devoid of sarcasm as a 1950s boy scouts’ jamboree. If someone were to ask me for the name of a blog entirely lacking in sarcasm, I would unhesitatingly answer “John Ward’s”.

Very occasionally, if you will forgive me from saying so, I do think that you’re a prime example of a magnoliphant – one whose skin is as thick as an elephant’s when it comes to hurling shit at named individuals, but as thin as a magnolia’s when there’s incoming criticism of your good self to be dealt with.

Be that as it may, I can take a hint as well as the rest of them, and so I’m off. Best of luck, however, to you and your faithful little band of bum lickers – and deep genuflections to your “sources” wherever and whoever they may be.

You’re clearly a truculent sort of chap. Nothing wrong with that, I like a man with spirit. Just not one with a mean spirit.
I have 2 very good sources on the Middle East and one narrow but life-changing experience from the past. But beyond that, I know nothing about it: I apply only these trusted informants and my common sense.
Hitlerian dictatorship is another matter. It was my thesis topic at Uni. In 1945, as the Allies picked through the rabble of the Third Reich, the lawmakers on site realised one thing very quickly: not a single element of the Weimar Constitution had been broken by Hitler.
Erdogan is an Islamist Hitler. I would imagine that in a free vote tomorrow, Boris Johnson could persuade a majority of the Brit electorate to go in a similar direction. And I have equally little doubt that BoJo too would observe all the niceties.
But they are both authoritarian personalities, and neither is to be trusted.
Democracy is NOT the test of a decent culture: Liberty is.
Disagree all you like, but do us all a favour and knock the peevish sarcasm on the head, can you? It’s not necessary.

J.C. Juncker got and keeps his job because, as he admitted himself, if he considers that lying to citizens advances the cause of the European Project, he will do so without hesitation. The fact that he continues to be Prime Minister of Luxembourg and is still counted as part of the in group of the European Project, says a lot about the health of democracy in Europe and the nature of the European Project.

@Triestino: OK, humour aside …I was making the point that — although we have a bunch of innumerate, incompetent and corrupt leaders — most people do not wish them to be replaced by a military dictatorship (I have to disagree with you: Turkey is not a military dictatorship even though it used to be some years ago and the military still keep a watchful eye).

Erdogan is virtually an Islamic fascist and appears to have been elected! All good reasons to deny them entry into the EU. What we want here is exactly what JW wrote: “ACCOUNTABLE LEADERSHIP”.

Alas, maxter, it’s no use in this company talking about Russia Today. Most of the people here think that the USSR still holds sway. Here, moreover, people work to the simple formula Israel = 100 percent right and the Islamic world = 100 percent wrong. The Russians, too, are unspeakably vile, and the Orientals (though they are hardly ever discussed here, thank God) are quite unmentionable – exactly like the others, not the sort of fellows to be seen with on a Sunday morning in the saloon bar of the Lamb and Flag.

No, it’s not just Europe that will be occupied by the insane Erdoganic hordes. Mark my words, it will be North and South America, China, Japan, Australasia and India. Beats me why we don’t drop a few hydrogen bombs on Turkey, preferably while Christine Lagarde is visiting there, and stop the poisonous infection (as AH would have called it) at birth. In the meantime, anyone visiting travel agents to ask about holidays in Turkey should be taken round the back of the shop and shot immediately.

We should of course be immensely happy with our Camerons, and Sarkozys, and Merkels, and Berlusconis – an absolutely splendid body of chaps, and a wonderful advertisement for European democracy at work. Far better than the demented military dictatorship in Turkey, where millions are packed off without trial to the gulags every week.

How Juncker, with all his ‘experience’ got a plum EU job is beyond me, and most other people. But we are not in much of a position to carp, having had Dr Brown at the financial helm for a decade. The real question, though, is how to send him back to the town council level of responsibility where he belongs. And then to find a way to stop the self-pronounced ‘experts’ from the backwoods imposing themselves on us.

Twas always said the next world war would start in the middle east,and here we have the right ingredients to start it.Israels battle to stay where she is,and cope with rising inflation,aided and abetted by an incompetent Prime minister,Netanyahu,the guy who can only say no. Turkey with ambitions to be top dog,who have a seriously strong military force.The mixture of people in Palestine,who are good at stone throwing ,and not much else. Hovering in the wings,Iran,China and Russia,the real threat,although the timing is not quite right. Another incompetent,who is floundering on the world stage,is Cameroon,no experience,tries to do it all himself,in between holidays,and seems to be making a hash(pun intended)of everything.If he had not lied about the referendum,he would have been home and dry,but even if the EU collapses which looks almost a certainty,he is not wanted on voyage. Perhaps we can then get on to the real reasons why this all happening.Overpopulation,lack of resources because of, and funny money.

That Juncker was sent to Ankara indicates, surely, the low position to which Turkey has sunk these days in the EU scheme of things. Actually, they should by rights have sent another complete nonentity, namely Catherine Ashton, but she was probably too busy doing the Daily Mail crossword puzzle and knitting unsightly jumpers on the Thursday afternoon train back to St Albans, so they sent Briefcase Billy instead.

On Erdogan, for whom I hold no brief whatsoever, it seems to me slightly perverse to bang on about the deplorable lack of political leadership in western Europe, only to make a loud fuss when political leadership of the kind we need emerges in other parts of the world. And as for British foreign policy, what can the Foreign Office realistically do these days, without offending their masters in Washington? Send Yapping William? Do me a favour!
