EVANGELO VENIZELOS, AN OVERFLOWING BANK ACCOUNT, & GERMAN ARMS BRIBERY

Mathiopoulus (l) with German Foreign Minister Bruno Westerwelle

The good life and bad deeds of the Greek elite, featuring Margarita Mathiopoulus

Large numbers of poverty-stricken Greeks are wondering this weekend why their Finance Minister’s current account with an Athenian bank has in excess of three million euros in it. He is clearly a man with little need to worry about sweating his assets, and with every day the evidence as to why that might be keeps on piling up – thanks to the generosity of Greek contacts fed up of seeing their country rogered by fatties. It seems that no matter where you start in the Greek elite, all roads lead to Evangelo Venizelos. Today we start with Greco-German trougher, Margarita Mathiopoulus.

As the daughter of a senior leftist member of the Greek elite, Margarita Mathiopoulus was always going to be well-connected. After the military junta took over in Athens, the Mathiopoulus clan were given political asylum in Germany. Thus she grew up in the BundesRepublik, there mixing with many elements of the social democrat Left, and catching the eye of statesman Willy Brandt. She speaks fluent German and Greek, and very good English.

For a while her reputaion was based on a glittering academic career, but then some clouds appeared to spoil things a little. As the Soviet Union appeared more and more wobbly in the 1980s, Mathiopoulus declared in the German media that “The citizens of the GDR do not want reunification. At demonstrations they demand reform, not reunification. We have to recognise the division of Germany to overcome the division of Europe.” That was Brandt Ostpolitik personified – and an interesting comment given the events that immediately followed. Given the recent actions of Berlin, it sounds even more interesting.

She was proved spectacularly wrong – and classically gullible in the manner of most of the European soft Left at the time. But her governmental influence didn’t wane. In the academic sphere, however, her career took a nosedive. Investigative journalists at Der Spiegel had long suspected Margarita of being a phony, and in September 1989 the title reported that her doctoral dissertation  was “in several places almost verbatim” copied from the work of others. Without much care or subtlety, it was fairly obvious that she had plagiarised other theses, and her doctorate was thus withdrawn. It was time for Margarita to diversify….and this she did with spectacular success.

From 1992 to 1997, she was a Board director, Head of Marketing Communications and International Relations at the Norddeutsche Landesbank.Very odd title that one, but perhaps reflecting that during this period she had become the Chief Foreign Policy Advisor to rising politician Guido Westerwelle. Herr Westerwelle is now Angela Merkel’s Foreign Minister. Hold that thought.

From 1998 to 2001,  Mathiopoulos became chief adviser to the CEO of the UK aerospace and defence company BAE Systems. And we all know what happened there. But being female and therefore born to multi-task, in 2000 she also became Chairperson of the panel sitting to decide on how to restructure the Greek armed forces. And in that last year of chairing the future of corrupt Greek arms procurement, Margarita teamed up in July with Klaus Naumann , Istvan Gyarmati and Carl Bildt, to found the European Advisory Group (EAG) with offices in Berlin, Hong Kong and Washington, where she is still the managing partner.

Like I said, a seriously connected lady. But once again, all is not rosey in her cv. Thanks to very much appreciated assistance from the Greek website porta2porta (door to door), I am now able to reveal some details from a confidential report on defence issues between the German Bundesrepublik and the Hellenic Republic of Greece. Further revelations from this will follow tomorrow, but for the time being (although Ms Mathiopoulus doesn’t feature much in the report) she is a person uniquely well placed to have taken advantage or otherwise from the German/Greek defence relationship.

During her years of diversification, Mathiopoulus had become a facilitating consultant via EAG to one of the most crooked engineering and military suppliers in history, the German company Ferrostaal. Simply typing ‘Ferrostaal bribery’ into Google evokes 312,000 references and sites. We shall be learning a great deal more about Ferrostaal in due course, but let’s focus on EAG’s leading light for a few paragraphs. In 2004 – again with Maragarita’s alleged facilitation input – Ferrostaal formed a joint venture with German arms dealer KruppThyssen to supply submarines to various southern and Third World folks….including Greece. The venture – Marine Force International (MFI) – based itself in London. Given Mathiopoulus’s positive experiences with BaE, one can only assume that it was her advice that led to the office being based in the homeland of serial justice perverter Tony Blair.

As it happens, KruppThyssen is a straight company as far as one can tell. On 8th December last – following numerous graft charges being thrown at Ferrostaal by judges throughout Germany – Der Spiegel reported that Krupp was pulling out of MFI, effective immediately. The publication observed (my emphasis) ‘ThyssenKrupp’s planned withdrawal is believed to be linked to a corruption scandal involving Ferrostaal. The Munich public prosecutor’s office has accused Ferrostaal of paying millions of euros in bribes to Greece related to the purchase of 214-class submarines.’

The man in charge of the Defence portfolio in Greece from 2009-2011 was….Evangelo Venizelos. The very same man who, in 2005, authored a law to make all Greek Government ministers immune from corruption prosecutions. But meanwhile, back to Margarita the multitasking multinational minx. So central to the MFI joint venture was Mathiopoulus, she was consulting for the company even before it became operational. A confidential report commissioned by senior officials in Germany notes as follows:

‘[She] was to assist with anticipated projects in Egypt and Croatia. Although no projects materialised, Ms Mathiopoulus received 1.2 million euros….her attorney allegedly maintained in a telephone conversation with MFI that his client ‘could not turn up empty-handed’ for the discussions in Egypt’.

Call this a leap, but I guess that kind of fingers Margarita of the dolce vita as a bag-carrier for bribes. But there doesn’t seem to be a record of any money going from EAG to Egyptian authorities. Clearly, some of the MFI bigwigs concluded they’d been double-crossed. A later extract from the report states that:

‘MFI determined not to enter into additional agreements with Professor Mathiopoulus, notwithstanding various attempts on her part in the following years…’

This was the person chosen by the Greek elite to chair a committee about arms supplies. This was the committee that chose Ferrostaal as a major supplier of submarines (through MFI). Writes an opposition source in Athens:

‘Ferrostaal’s reputation as a corrupt supplier of arms was extremely well recognised long before this. They [the Government] have chosen them for the ease of making money, of stealing from Greek people. Venizelos was one of them. He still was last year. It is the same always in Greece….we are betrayed by the political class.’

The confidential report backs up this Slog correspondent’s allegation to the letter:

‘The overwhelming lack of compliance-related discussions and action at the Vorstand [Boardroom ] level is striking, particularly in the light of Ferrostaal’s history of paying bribes prior to Germany’s adoption of the OECD anti-bribery convention in 1997…’

Tomorrow I shall examine in more detail how poor German watchdog controls on bribery led to Greece being massively overcharged for many military items, particularly submarines….which don’t come cheap in the first place. We have already seen Berlin’s hypocrisy in enforcing the strangulation of the Hellenic economy via the ill-judged Troika austerity programme…while insisting that all German arms contracts are honoured in full.

But today’s piece is making a simple point, using the unfortunate but thoroughly deserving body of Margarita Mathiopoulus as the medium. It is this: the Greek elite is run on the basis of who knows whom, who has the contacts, who will pay the money, and where a turn can be made. Everyone knows everyone else in this tiny, almost incestuous Establishment – and almost all of them are ineluctably corrupted by the system into which they have been born.

Ms Mathiopoulus herself has shown how – despite cheating in her academic life, displaying glaring examples of poor judgement, and involvement in shady dealings – she has continued to prosper on the basis of happy connections rather than real talent. I am old-fashioned enough to reject David Cameron’s idea of ‘the leg up’. I think the leg up ends up in the carve-up….as the Greek people are finding to their sad cost.

The elite lording it over Greece are working for a paymaster, an EU, and a banking system shown to be equally corrupt, equally self-serving, and equally devoted to its own wellbeing at the expense of the citizens. Of course the Greeks don’t want to leave the euro, because they do not believe they can make it in the post-default world without the help of their EU ‘partners’. In the economic, political and social senses, that is simply bollocks: Greece will be a cleaner, more competitive, happier and prouder country out of the EU. As will, in time, the United Kingdom itself.

Now published: Guilty Greeks named in scam to double the price of German submarines

Emails from Greece – replete with attachments are flooding into the mailbox at jawslog@gmail.com. If you have something to tell me about this or any other scandal, please do get in touch. Remember: there are only a few thousand of the self-appointed masters…and 210 million of us.

This is the perfect website for anybody who wants to understand this topic. You understand a whole lot its almost hard to argue with you (not that I actually would want to…HaHa). You certainly put a new spin on a subject which has been written about for a long time. Excellent stuff, just wonderful!

Jim Sinclair – Greek Tragedy Part of $37 Trillion, Not $3.5 Billion
    kingworldnews.com
    MARCH 09, 2012
Today legendary trader and investor Jim Sinclair told King World News the “credit event” in Greece totals much more than the $3.5 billion which is being reported by the mainstream media. Sinclair also said if the CDS’s are in fact made to pay, this could require the rescuing of eight international banks, through Fed swaps that could total in the trillions of dollars. Here is what Sinclair had to say about what is happening : “The release made by the International Swaps & Derivatives Association (ISDA), for the average Mensa member or genius, is totally incomprehensible. The press is using the word default, but the ISDA is using the word ‘auction.’ Clearly, the amount of CDS’s outstanding is infinitely more than the $3.5 billion that is being quoted.”
    Jim Sinclair continues:

“The BIS confirms, in the area of CDS’s the total outstanding is approximately $37 trillion. So I believe the reports being given about this just being a small and modest market event is false. As a market observer and having more than 50 years in the business, the real number is at least 50% or more of the existing $37 trillion that is related to Greece.

True, Germany was defeated twice in a war and had to take all the blame for it. But Germany recovered within a few years after WW2 and the Marshall plan capital was helping but the reason for the recovery was the structure of the German economy. Greece is on a kind of Marshall plan for decades, there was no war and still they are broke now, just because they are living beyond their means. The EU and Germany is of course to blame for the illusion, that a third world country like Greece could be a member of an union of first world countries without causing troubles. That´s why Greece should be kicked out.

    Dear Silverage
I went through out your thoughts carefully and i am trying deeply to understand whIch are those reasons which have turned you into a solid rock made out of stereotypes .

The same thoughts i would adreess to my fellow Hellenic People for adopting similar ideas as the ones which hear in the name of ” the others are responsible except us ”.

Yes we are responsible for most of the problems . Because as Hellenic -Europeans let white trash -trast of uneducated in life morals & ethics morans politicians to run critical stractures of our Nations , i believe the same happens in your country also .

As a matter of fact i think you should explain how as a PROUND AMERICAN-greek ? (handout support as you describe ) accept to be raped from your Banking system or how do you accept even as an idea to know that your banksters literally lifted the money of my beloved tax American payers from their acounts ? And so many other scandals that no one will explain . Do you know why because in USA which i really appreciate as a nation anfortunatelly the last decades new powers have emerged FEDERAL BANK ETC ETC ….. and there are not even Americans , you are in deep trouble , remind my word and lets talk in a few months . Isnt like that …

See here there are lazy unions but over there … some of you !!!! prefer to check out the new ‘quesadilla”’ size of Dell taco . Its a matter of aspect .

We are responsible because we have allowed though accepting this plasmatic eudaimonic situation to fall from the inside . But not worries as you say in Us . WE WILL RECOVER AGAINST ALL ODDS.

By the way Beggers are not the Hellenic People but the Banks . By the way Begger is not me but the ”investors ” who althought placed their money wrongly now they are asking to socialize the debth . Beggers should be me when iam saying thay there are plenty of open bills with

in conclusion I can feel your points even your diapointment by really unessesary comments while your visits …… ownestly , but your critical ability of analysing fundamental asspect of a problem is traped in an epidermic approach simplistic on every level …. something like black or white , Lazy Hellenes , Hard Working Germans … Handout help vs Beggers ….. do you know how many of those examples i could present you ? unlimited but then i would be one of those Hellenes who just judje and blame all the rest …..

See the problem for me it isnt right now if you call me lazy as i know who am i or if i pay the taxes or how many Hours iam working.
We could speak for hours about our mistakes but the Other ” ETHICAL NATIONS OF EUROPE” pointless .

My only concern is first how i will we will

    1) Anagenessis my Beloved Country
    2) Katharsis of Political System

    3) Delay what is comming to your door ! As maybe you will be occupied to Macy’s
    4) Unite Europe under a different model of development and why not the whole world .

PS 1 I dont know if God or Mother Nature blessed my Country but take under consideration that here in my mother land we have/had plenty of charismas one of it is/was to easily forgive our system collaborating with our oppressors . But that is over now

PS 2 I Really want to Hope besides your personal beliefs you will give your childs the opportunity to form their own idea about the land that Their Grandfaters and Mother are comming . Thats at least the only thing you should do . All the rest will be written by History soon on a global level !

You should be glad, obviously these Greeks can’t compare with you, not everybody can be so superior, so magnificent as yourself. I am surprised it is all Greeks though, I have been around a bit & couldn’t help noticing that populations tend to be mixed with percentages of lazy people & those who are industrious. Still I can understand your point of view, it must be very frustrating when people don’t acknowledge their obvious inferiority & refuse to treat you with the deference you so obviously deserve.
Have you any particular reason for trying to deflect attention from the big thieves back onto the little ones ?
I knew a few lazy Irishmen from the Dingle peninsular, they used to snigger at the big fat Americans stomping around in the rain wearing shorts & baseball caps. I don’t think either of these 2 groups are typical of Irish or Americans but to those of a bigoted disposition they probably are.

Feb 5/12: 6th sub contract. The Jerusalem Post reports that the deal for a 6th Dolphin submarine is now a signed contract:

“Christian Schmidt, [Germany’s] secretary of state for defense, told the Post that the contract was signed a few weeks ago and that Germany had agreed to subsidize its cost…. The submarines under construction will be fitted with a new [AIP] propulsion system…. Schmidt said that Germany was looking to increase its defense cooperation with Israel and was specifically interested in learning from the IDF about training and military doctrine.

In 2006, the deal for 2 Dolphin AIP boats was finalized at a total of $1.27 billion, with the German government picking up 1/3 of the cost. The new boats are built at the Howaldtswerke-Deutche Werft AG (HDW) shipyard

There are three possible explanations about your short-minded and bigoted comments:

    (a) You are completely oblivious to what is actually happening and you only consume easily digested news headlines that don’t require too much thinking.

    (b) You are trying to provoke by starting a flame-thread for no apparent reason other than your own self-pity for bearing such “lazy, greedy, sloth like” genes.

    (c) Your personal experiences in Greece were -sadly- limited to your immediate surroundings to such a suffocating point that actually explains the reason your formed opinion is so spectacularly distorted.

In any case, you have made the right choice of not visiting Greece ever again. Greeks who do not fall into the category you so vividly described above will probably deem you not welcome anyway.

The Greek people are getting “hosed”, but the Greek people themselves are just as much to blame!!

They are a lazy lot. Their Unions make and recieve ridiculous compensations. The people cheat their way out of paying taxes, yet expect everything from their own, elected officials.

I was in Greece with my family (wife and twins), and my inlaws this past summer. I decided to take the twins ASAP before Greece completely fell into chaos. (I timed it well). I wanted them to see where their Grandparents came from.

Greece is an incredibly gorgeous country, with some of the laziest people I have ever seen! And the prices, criminal for what service and quality you recieve.

I would never return to this beautiful country again, nor would I recommend anyone to visit.

God has blessed the Greeks with one of the most beautiful countries in the entire WORLD, yet they have turned it to shit, or as the Greeks would say, SKATA!!!

John, I love your Blog, but I am sick and tired of the citizens of Greece trying to blame everyone but themselves. These are the same people who constantly mocked America, and Americans. As a child I would visit and they would refer o us Yanks as “GoloAmericanakia” (asshole Americans). Funny how these Greek beggers have no problem receiving handouts from “asshole Americans” now. Instead of welcoming Greek Americans who have visited over the years, the Greeks would talk garbage. Now they do not have our sympathies, now we look at them and ask where all that false bravado went.

Yes, their politicians are selling them up the river, honestly ALL politicians all over the world would sell their people up the river for the all mighty currency. But the Greeks citizens are the ones being raped now, because their politicians found a lazy, greedy, sloth like population that will lay down like dogs as they get raped.

I continue to look forward to your blog!

Still in denial? The Greek people are not to blame at all for their situation? Nothing went wrong in Greece over the past decades? Seems to me you and a lot of other Greeks still have a long way to go till you get to realityland.

Btw, i know very well what is going wrong in my country. But Germans have ways to take care of these problems. Greeks should take care and solve their own problems, they have more than enough of them, and not think about old German problems they do not understand anyway and that have been solved a long time ago.

Question no1: Of course Greece is broke and not Germany.
I thought that was obvious. Will you feel better if I write it down 150 times until Monday morning?

Question no2: It seems that a sensitive chord is touched with many of you whenever someone “broke” or “failed” dares to question the GOVERNMENT of the “successful” and “prudent”.
After all, beggars cannot make noise, they should be amusing and grateful for your tolerance and charity, knowing who’s the master, just like those lovely but unlucky children in Afrika and Irak: Germany only helps, it is the americans that destroy the world with their adventurisms.
How dare I imply that the German government (which your pavlovian reflex immediately equated with yourself) is not a force for good in the world?

Well, assuming that you are a German, I hope, but not really expect, that you would search a little bit better what the role of the german establishment is (I assume that you read this post because you were interested about the greek one): If more of you do it, you might avert the third looting of your savings within a century.
For a start, ask yourself: Both Germans and Greeks are stripped of their money and they won’t see any benefit from bailouts, which are destined to fail. Where do the money go then? Who is going to benefit?

    Take care.

I should also not forget some strange allegations by a certain Dr. Kyriakos Tompras (his website is http://www.minisikerdoskopon.gr) towards Frau Kanzlerin Merkel:

If you can’t recall something Mrs. Merkel… no problem, we ‘ll help you.
We possess all evidence… for places, time, bank accounts and individuals… up to the colour of their underwear.

    1. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that from 1998 up to the present time, the germal chancellery leads, promotes and directs not only the collection but also the laundering of illegal commisions to political personnel (both in government and in the opposition) in countries like Greece, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Croatia and Romania?

    2. Is it TRUE that up to 15% of the collected commisions flows in secret accounts of Bavaria’s Christian Socialist Union (CSU), from there on being distributed to other german parties, ensuring the funding of secret ops?

    3. Is it TRUE that the beginning of that investment fund of political bribery was in June 6, 1998 after an 80 million $ portfolio of US bonds was delivered from a greek party (commisions from the program of the dutch frigates for the greek navy) to representatives of the german secret services, a center-stage german bank, and a french bank?

    4. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that in exchange of the “pension assurances” you offer to those corrupt politicians, you “convince” them to decide in accordance with the interests and moods of the german government?

    5. Is it TRUE that the 2 million DM collected by your predecessor Helmut Kohl comes from those funds?

    6. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that in April 2009 non-anonymous allegations were made in the european anti-fraud office (OLAF), which the then german head of the office conveniently —after instructions of your government— put aside?

    7. Is it TRUE that at the same time a lawsuit was submitted in Berlin’s prosecutor office on the same matter, which, under instructions from your government, was put aside as well?

    8. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that you, as a president of the CDU, as well as your predecessors Helmut Kohl and Wolfgang Schauble, never respected the german laws regarding the funding of political parties?
Or did you declare in the parliament’s office the 18 million DM that were given to a Munich’s notary by two industrialists, in order fund the election campaign of your party, through a certain advertisement company?

    9. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that in February 2006 you pressured by means of blackmails the then greek prime minister to bury the uncovered interception case?

    10. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that since February 2002 the german secret service recruited greek citizens living as tourists in Dresden who had been members of the 17N (November 17) terrorist group, responsible for funding the organization, as well as leading members of the greek criminal world?
Did you let them collect a 5.7 million euro check and hide them in the tunesian city of Sousse until the case is forgotten?
Do these individuals still work for the german secret service?
Why didn’t you inform the greek antiterror service?

    11. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that a german official had the leader of a greek left party resign from a renewed candidacy after threatening him to disclose details of his private life?

    12. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that three greek parties were funded with 16.4 million euros from secret funds of your government this year?

    13. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that a contigency plan exists for the military cover and protections of german citizens that act for your government in Greece?
Did the 4th office of the german army staff in the military camp Falkenstein in the city of Koblenz take over the operational planning of a “NATO” police-military intervention in Greece?

    14. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that your government set up, funded and supported FYROM’s appeal to the international court in Hague?

    15. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that in discussion with respresentatives from two countries, you predicted that in the near future some areas in western Thrace and a zone around Florina will become independent in order to protect the minorities living there?

    16. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that members of the greek government asked you, fearing future prosecution from the greek justice, to commit for their protection?

    17. Is it TRUE Mrs. Merkel that german retailers in Greece pay, by overpricing their products, bribes to third parties?
Was this the reason ALDI withdrew from the greek market?
Are these bribes used to buy the conscience of greek politicians and journalists?

    18. Finally, Mrs. Merkel, is it TRUE that a minister of your government gathered in the spring of 2010 in Berlin all importers and exporters of the greek photovoltaic market and set up a cartel with predetermined prices and area distribution in Greece?

German U-boots had many people go under, some of them even while taking a shower (Fall Uwe Barschel).

More generally, defense and healthcare are the two prime sources of corruption in almost every country.
For investigating corruption, defense is an easy field because I am not aware of any arms deal that did not involve kickbacks.
For some early history on the matter, google Basil Zaharoff, the Stafford Cripps agreement to sell Rolls-Royce “Nene” jet engines to the Soviets, the Lockheed Scandal, the Boeing Scandal and finally the Saudi/BAE scandal.
    Nice world, isn’t it?

Healthcare fraud is a different species and less investigated: Who would like to be accused of letting people die, because he/she would suspend unnecessary procurement or scrutinize overpricing in the health sector?

Thus, the incumbent defense minister (Mr. Avramopoulos) had 15 million doses of H5N1 shots ordered when he was health minister some years ago, before the crisis had started. The cost was in the order of billion euros, but I guess this was an example of contingency planning and caring for the citizens, not fraud…

There is an excellent greek blog that investigated the subject, which was actually not so difficult because the agents of (legalized) corruption in Greece have become so unscrupulous so as to not even care to hide.
The blogger’s low end estimate is that at least 15 billion euros of public money were squandered in the pockets of doctors, pharmaceutical companies and friends between 2000-2008.
The blog’s address is http://ermippos.blogspot.com (in greek). I guess you could contact him, I ‘m almost sure he knows english, and he would have a lot to say…

Of course, the third great corruption pool was the public works for the Olympiad between 1998-2004.
Again the typical case for fraud: Do nothing for the first two to three years (because as everybody knows, greeks are late starters) and then, “anxious” about the delays and the fear of being humiliated as a nation, award fraudulent contracts to construction companies as a “national emergency” without any accountability (money first, questions later).
Not to forget, the inimitable press from the UK and the US about collapsing or incomplete stadiums and the threat of terrorist attacks from the middle east. From the origininal budget of 200 million euro for security, we got to two billion, for security systems that do not work. Look up SAIC C4i scandal.

This was the period when the great looting techniques were tested (in the US it was in 2001). Since they worked then, they are now applied to a larger scale.

On a completely unrelated note: I’m sat watching countryfile at the moment and they are bleating about climate change and food (with a “carbon footprint consultant” for good measure!). Utterly f***ing absurd.

And what bit-part for serial justice evader Blair in re BAE, etc? It seems the temple must revert in its entirety to ground level.

The Greek elites obviously need the advice of one Mr Phony Tony Baloney to camouflage their assets better. His consultancy fees are quite reasonable, I’m informed (about 10% of the skim, min £5 million). I mean, leaving €3 million in your Athens bank account as Venizelos has (allegedly) done is plain daft. It should never have come anywhere near.

And just think: they’re all socialists. Corrupton is in their DNA.
