THE SUCCESS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION WILL BE THE DEATH OF EUROPEAN CULTURE

win_20190127_120036 Without the retention and encouragement of natural, bottom-up cultures, the human race will sink into an abyss of bureaucratic status quo. The battle between controlling process and open-minded creativity is the war of our Age.

¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤

Ever since Microsoft bought Skype – now somewhat old hat, but ten years ago, a revolution in international phone charges – the service has degraded, the bollocks content has trebled, the updates have quadrupled….and excellent phone alternatives like WhatsApp and Messenger have (I’d imagine) cut a swathe through its business model.

Every time Skype updates me, the service is always a mess for at least a fortnight. The last one was a month ago, and now this morning they want to award me another one. They seem to be oblivious to the competition biting at their heels: not a single update occurs with a view to improving the service. The only criterion appears to be the desire of one binary pointyhead to have something new and groovy up there. (I’d have ditched it long ago in favour of WhatsApp, but for the fact that SFR here in France doesn’t support it. But then, that’s the anti-protectionist, free-market EU for you).

Gmail gave itself a really flash new look two months ago. Now it’s like settling down to watch a movie: there’s a really neat animated logo, and a little red line that shows the connection gradually becoming secure and then bingo, up come your emails. The only problem is, it takes twice as long to load….and if you go to another window for more than a minute, it starts from the beginning again. Meanwhile, the way Gmail orders conversations remains as eccentric as ever.

The “improvement” to Gmail consists of a cheesy choice of replies you can make to your friends when they e you to say they got dumped or had a leg bitten off by a crocodile. So the choices for that latter one would be No Shit, Go boil your Head, and Never Smile at a crocodile. But just think of the time you save not having to type the response yourself:

“Crocodile, schmocodile….I’m busy already. Look, you take an outback trip, there are crocodiles there, am I right? Caveat emptor for fuck’s sake”.

You see, Google emotes so you don’t have to.

Last week, the host of this your favourite website replied to my complaints about ads appearing via certain browsers (a) without my permission and (b) without any kickback for me. This was their response on Twitter:

Wordpresshit.PNGIf you think that’s an adequate reply from a host caught in the act of using my ten year investment in a blog brand without my permission while not telling me about it is adequate, well fine and rock on. Do you want to buy Westminster Bridge as a feature for your back garden, as you sound like just the sort of mug I need.

Observe the mealy-mouthed non-apology: “We have to be dishonest and fuck up the look of your site without your permission because without us doing that, you’d have to pay”.

—————————————————————

The foregoing may have seemed to you merely a series of moans about the service and integrity gap that typifies almost every last provider of internet service.

But my point here is that, without the right culture, every person, organisation and country on the planet will go wrong.

A bad culture that ignores all sound advice to change will go to the wall.

An outfit that contains conflicting cultures will pull itself apart until a civil war lines a lot of people up against the wall.

Only a creation with a clear, majority and forever relevant culture will smash through every wall to solve a problem.

The ultimate fate of the three examples above will be, respectively, revolution, vassal status, and benevolent survival.

I embrace the idea of a multi-ethnic society that adds positively to the overall culture of the host. I reject the insane concept of a multicultural society where one or more minority sexuality, gender, racial, ideological or religious groups want to dominate the debate.

—————————————————–

However, by far the worst of all worlds is the attempt by a non-existent culture to impose its imperial fantasies onto individual sovereign States. There never was any such thing as a ‘Soviet’ culture. After nearly 250 years, there is still no such thing as an ‘American’ culture. After 3,000 years there is no such thing as a ‘Chinese’ culture. And as sure as eggs are oeufs, there is no such thing as a ‘European’ culture.

There are, however, Muscovite, Tartar and Bashir cultures, a Californian culture, a Deep South culture, a Mandarin culture, a Hoinam culture, an Aquitaine culture, a Parisian culture, a Macedonian culture, a Mani culture and many, many others around the world.

The Earth is not a Global Village, it is a fascinating kaleidoscope of cultural difference and adaptive diaspora. It is a planet upon which live millions of species, almost all of them dependent on the survival of other species. This means that the most successful inhabitants are those that compete to ensure species development, and cooperate with other tribes and species to ensure maximal survival.

Perhaps not in my lifetime – but certainly before the century is half over – all of the major power blocs will have disintegrated into their cultural parts. And leading the way in this change (almost entirely as a result of their its own existential hubris) will be the European Union.

Your messaging problems would be solved by moving to telegram.org, they also do voice calls (I’ve spoken to a chum holidaying in Sri Lanka without problems or latency) You could also publish your blog there on a Telegram Channel (all the best bloggers hang out there now)

Anyone who knew Europe in the 1970’s and 80’s will know that the EU has already killed off the cultures and idiosyncrasies of individual nations.
And on the subject of i.t., individuals’ files stored “in the cloud” are physically stored in arrays of computers which, like the HQs of the major i.t. companies, are sitting right on top of the San Andreas fault. When that goes, bang goes everything. On top of that, a huge solar flare or a slight tilt in the magnetic axis will knock out communication satellites. All these things will happen one day, and on that day i.t. fails globally.

I like the fact you are looking in to your crystal ball. Much better for the soul (and your blood pressure) than trying to use modern technology. I have been dragged in to this modern on line world kicking and screaming and I must admit I find it quite stressful.
I found a yoga DVD in a charity shop last week and I enjoy it’s 20 minutes routine. I find it good to switch off the brain for a while.
Big business wants us all to be techy but really it’s costly to the mind and the pocket. And God help you if you move. EE will always switch you off (!) before you move out and then not turn you on again for about 3 weeks. And you and try and survive these days with no internet and having to converse with their bullying Call Centre!

“Local” is popular. Being “green” is cool.

We are circling back to where we were. Twas ever thus. But this time we will be tinged with different cultures and genes. Hopefully less aggressive ones following the rise of LGBT rights.

Of course the world is a global village, it is our only village. But we have a lot of neighbourhoods with different cultures. Trying to equalize these into one is the problem. Greets from Belgium!

Quite right John, the fact that everything is ephemeral within a certain time span is something we have forgotten. The average life of a UK business is put at 10 years. S&P 500 US businesses now have a lifespan of 15 years compared with 67 a century ago. The average life of a run of the mill car is 7 years, which for British cars is an improvement, believe it or not. The average lifespan of a house built post WW2 is 70 years, judging by my observation of new build houses today during construction I would give them 30 years and I certainly wouldn’t buy one.

Of course, you also have to factor in the modern, 1960s on penchant to build in obsolescence. White goods last about 5 years today when pre 1960 they would last 15 without repair (there was much truth in the sit-com title “Never mind the quality, feel the width.”) and repair is, of course, also out of the question today, since the parts alone usually are either unobtainable or cost near as much as a new machine, more than, if you are unable to do the repair yourself. Nor can you rely on price as an indicator of quality today.

    Peter,
Anyone doubting you in this regard should come and see my antique Frigidaire. Bought in a south London sale in 1990, so coming up for its 30th Birthday before long. Even the interior light still works. My last Samsung lasted just over 3 years. This is what happens when an economic system is driven by rate of sale. JW

Having travelled extensively around the world and having observed what mass immigration has done to Britain over the last twenty years, I just don’t buy the idea that culture is separate from race and ethnicity. 80% of the gangs in London are black and knife crime is at a 70 year high – it coincidentally being 70 years since the Windrush docked. As such, I don’t accept the idea that it’s solely due to ‘fatherless young Afro-Caribbean men’ because many of the new gangs are from African households where the family is still largely intact.

In the same way that the white Anglo-Saxon is predisposed to hooliganism and drunken violence so it seems that the black youth is given to ultra aggressive street crime. You only have to look around the world to see the same patterns repeating themselves and then compare and contrast it with the far more pacific Chinese who are much less violent either in the West or in China.

Similarly, even if every Pakistani Muslim in Britain became an atheist overnight, I bet my bottom dollar that they will continue to be a source of gang violence, rape and corruption because they are so ethnocentric as a group and are deeply damaged by centuries of cousin marriage.

It’s worth remembering that in addition to the true extent of the grooming gangs outrage running to over 100,000 English girls, rape in general is also at an all time high. Ann Coulter goes on a bit but I think she’s right when she says that (white) American women will rue the day they say good-bye to the old America. Ditto Sweden, Holland, Germany and France.

It feels nice and open minded to say that one values a multi-ethnic society but i think it has already been proved to have been a catastrophic development in comparison with the high trust low crime homogeneous society it has, without any democratic consent, replaced. And I don’t see anyway of improving it.
    —————
It’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. I can show you African countries (like Botswana) where the youth crime rate is very low, and I can show you Italian cities where youth gangs make Yardies look like cissies. I don’t believe negroes are genetically predisposed to criminal activity; equally, however, I don’t believe all cultures are equal. JW

Wouldn’t a VPN sort your WhatsApp problem out? You just set your IP to the UK, it should bypass any controls restricting it, although not all VPN’s are the same. You’d be surprised where you can go with a good VPN, and not expensive either considering the convenience.
